About Your Appointment
Before the exam:
Answers about vision history help your eye doctor understand your risk of eye disease and vision problems. Be prepared to give specific information, including:
- Do you have any past or current eye problems or surgeries?
- Do you currently have or feel you need glasses?
- Do you have a family history of any eye problems such as glaucoma or macular degeneration?
During the Exam:
An eye exam usually involves these steps:
- Your eye doctor does an exam to see if you need glasses
- To make it easier for your doctor to examine the inside of your eye, he or she may dilate your eyes with eye drops. Then your eye pressure is measured.
Several tests may be performed during the eye exam. The tests check your vision and examine the appearance and function of all parts of your eyes.
After the Exam:
At the end of your eye exam, you and your doctor will discuss the results of all testing, including an assessment of your vision, your risk of eye disease and preventive measures you can take to protect your eyesight.
